As India gears up to celebrate its 77th Independence Day on August 15, tight security measures have been established across Kashmir. Inspector General of Police (IGP) V K Birdi confirmed on Tuesday that multi-layered security arrangements aim to ensure the peaceful conduct of events throughout the valley.
During a press briefing following a review of preparations at the Balidan Stambh, Birdi stated, “The Jammu and Kashmir Police always maintains robust security arrangements not just in Srinagar city, but across various districts of the valley.” The IGP emphasized that security precautions cover not only designated celebration locations but also the surrounding areas to guarantee public safety.
The police chief addressed concerns regarding recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama, noting that investigations are currently underway. He remarked, “It would not be appropriate for me to disclose that right now. Whenever there are clear details or information to be shared, we will do so at an appropriate time.”
In his appeal for public participation, Birdi said, “This is a public function. The police only act as helpers or organisers. We urge people to participate in these functions in large numbers and make them successful.” The police are aiming for community engagement alongside maintaining security.
On Monday, Birdi chaired a high-level security review meeting to discuss arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations. Key figures present included IG BSF and IG CRPF, along with an additional commissioner and senior officers from allied security agencies. The collaborative effort focuses on ensuring comprehensive security across all districts.
Seniors reported on security arrangements, detailing preparations in their respective districts. “Intensifying area domination and patrolling in sensitive zones is our priority,” Birdi directed his officers. The security arrangements for the main function scheduled to occur at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium are also under strict review.
Officers are to ensure that all preparations are completed well in advance, strengthening security checkpoints particularly during night hours. Expectations for vigilant monitoring exist across all areas, especially around city entry and exit points.
As part of the heightened security measures, police conducted surprise checks and frisking in areas like Lal Chowk to bolster safety. The focus is to maintain strict vigilance against any elements threatening peace and security.
Amid ongoing efforts, the local community looks forward to a peaceful celebration of Independence Day, reflecting both patriotic fervor and a commitment to safety.
