Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly, faced police detention in Patna on Wednesday while leading a protest march over police actions during the NEET exam paper leak scandal. The incident occurred near the Income Tax office, highlighting growing unrest among students in the state.
SSP Kartikeya K Sharma confirmed the detention, stating the police intervened as tensions flared during a march organized by Yadav and other leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Engaging with reporters just before his arrest, Yadav expressed profound concern over the government’s handling of recent examination controversies. He stated, “The government is pushing the future of students into darkness. Exam papers are getting leaked frequently.”
The protest commenced earlier in the day at JP Golambar, where Yadav led a group of RJD leaders and workers to Lok Bhavan, demanding accountability and changes in the examination system. Amidst the march, police employed water cannons to disperse the crowd as they attempted to breach barricades.
Yadav criticized the government’s heavy-handed approach, stating, “It is important to understand the emotions of Gen Z. The government used AK-47 rifles against the protesting students in Bihar, and pellet guns and nail-embedded batons against them in Delhi, just because they demanded an honest and transparent examination system.”
The unrest stems from a series of scandals involving the NEET examination process, raising questions about transparency and integrity in educational testing. Students and opposition leaders alike vocalized their frustration about the frequent leaks and the government’s inability to safeguard the examination process.
These protests underscore a larger sentiment among the youth in Bihar, who feel increasingly disillusioned by the current administration’s approach to education and governance.
As the situation develops, the RJD plans to continue its protests until significant reforms are initiated, aiming to restore faith in the examination system.
