Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account and posting abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments targeting a woman. The accused, who hails from Kachiguda, faces serious allegations for using social media to harass a politically exposed person.
According to V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, Hyderabad City, the accused allegedly created the fake profile to target a woman from Hyderabad. In October 2025, he posted objectionable comments on a video of the woman, which had originally been uploaded by the “Pura Local” Instagram channel. The video later spread across various social media platforms, drawing considerable attention.
The police acted swiftly after receiving a formal complaint from the victim, prompting a case to be registered under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These sections relate to cyber defamation and misuse of digital platforms.
Officials also stated that the accused used the fake Instagram account to conceal his identity while distributing offensive content intended to damage the complainant’s reputation. The police seized a mobile phone from him, which they believe contains further evidence related to the case.
In light of this incident, authorities urge social media users to be vigilant regarding online interactions. Police emphasized the importance of taking screenshots of abusive profiles and comments along with timestamps. This information can be crucial in investigations. They advised users to block or report abusive accounts but not before gathering necessary evidence.
Furthermore, the Cybercrime unit strongly recommended that individuals verify unknown social media accounts before engaging with them. They encouraged the public to avoid sharing or commenting on unverified content, especially when it appears provocative or inflammatory.
