KL Rahul Praises Galle Wicket After India’s 165-Run Win

Indian cricketer KL Rahul hailed the quality of the Galle pitch after India clinched a 165-run victory against Sri Lanka in the first Test, marking a strong start to the two-match series. The match showcased a brilliant contest between batters and bowlers, illustrating the quintessential charm of Test cricket.

In a stellar performance, all-rounder Manav Suthar emerged as the match-winner, claiming 10 wickets in the game, showcasing his talent despite having played only his second Test match. Devdutt Padikkal’s remarkable 167 runs set the stage for India’s commanding position, ensuring he received the Player of the Match award.

Post-match, Rahul commended the Galle surface, stating that it offered an exciting challenge for both bowlers and batters alike. He emphasized that the pitch provided support to spinners while enabling disciplined batters to score runs effectively. He highlighted Sonal Dinusha’s contributions for Sri Lanka, noting his talent with scores of 100 and 84 in both innings.

“I think it was a great Test match. The pitch played well throughout the five days. There was assistance for spinners, yet batters who committed to their plans managed to score. Sonal from the Sri Lankan side batted beautifully, applying a clear strategy against the spinners,” Rahul explained. “It was great to see fast bowlers like Suthar contribute significantly as well. All in all, it was a fantastic wicket and a great Test match.”

Moments after India secured their win, rain began to pour in Galle. Reflecting on the tension of the situation, KL Rahul mentioned that the team felt relieved to have secured the victory ahead of an impending downpour. The players aimed to dismiss key Sri Lankan batsmen swiftly and focused on breaking the critical partnership between Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha.

“Just relieved, honestly! We kept an eye on the clouds, knowing a big shower was imminent. We didn’t want to delay the contest and were keen on taking wickets quickly. After breaking that significant partnership, we regained confidence, knowing that we could tackle their lower order quickly,” he added.

India’s victory followed a solid performance, bowling Sri Lanka out for 206 while defending a target of 372 runs. Suthar cemented his status as a rising star by taking a remarkable 6/55 in the second innings, marking his maiden 10-wicket haul. This victory not only underscored India’s dominance in the match but also set a high bar for the second Test.

Sri Lanka began Day 5 at 84/4, with batsmen Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva showing resilience against the Indian attack. The duo added 95 runs before Jadeja removed Dhananjaya for 59 runs. Sri Lanka managed to reply with 284 runs, mainly due to Dinusha’s efforts, while India faced a challenging second innings, getting bowled out for 193 runs, leaving Sri Lanka to chase down 372 runs.
