Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan joined the Team India camp ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, commencing August 15 in Galle. The Indian squad faces a significant shift with Sarfaraz stepping in for Sai Sudharsan, who has been ruled out due to an injury.
Sarfaraz shared a selfie on Instagram sporting the Indian colors, showcasing his lean physique achieved through rigorous fitness efforts over recent months. This marks his return to the national fold after a hiatus since his last appearance against New Zealand in November 2024. During that series, India suffered a historic whitewash, their first home series loss in over a decade.
Making his international debut earlier in 2024 against England at home, Sarfaraz’s journey has experienced ups and downs. Although included in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series tour to Australia in 2024-25, he did not play. To date, he has participated in six Tests, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10, which includes one century and three half-centuries, with a best score of 150.
Sarfaraz has earned his spot once again following stellar performances in domestic cricket. In this year’s Ranji Trophy, he amassed 429 runs in seven matches, averaging 53.62 with one century and one fifty, boasting a best score of 227. He also shone in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, registering 329 runs in seven innings at an impressive average of 65.80 and a strike rate of 203.09.
His consistency extended to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 303 runs in six matches, averaging 75.75. Sarfaraz’s accomplishments have also led to a contract with CSK worth Rs 75 lakh, demonstrating his growing reputation in the cricketing community. In the Mumbai T20 League for Aakash Tigers MWS, he scored 161 runs across five innings, achieving a strike rate of 214.67.
Currently, India sits fifth in the World Test Championship standings with a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150, having recorded four wins and four losses in nine matches. Team India, aiming to solidify their position, will be led by Shubman Gill in the coming series.
The updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka now includes: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan. As the squad prepares for the challenge ahead, fans hope Sarfaraz’s return will invigorate the team’s performance on the field.
