Srinagar, December 22: In a mesmerizing display of nature’s might, Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake has completely frozen over for the first time in 34 years. The last time the lake experienced such a phenomenon was during the severe winter of 1990. This year’s prolonged sub-zero temperatures have created a spectacle that has left locals and tourists in awe.

Dal Lake, often referred to as the “Jewel of Kashmir,” typically experiences partial freezing during harsh winters. However, a complete freeze is a rarity, marking this as a historic moment for the region.

A Rare Phenomenon
With temperatures plunging as low as -8°C, the lake has transformed into a winter wonderland. Residents, especially the elderly, have drawn comparisons to the past. “I remember walking on the frozen Dal in my youth back in 1990. Seeing it like this again feels like stepping back in time,” said Mohammad Sultan, a Srinagar resident.

Challenges Amidst Beauty
While the frozen lake presents a stunning sight, it has also brought challenges. Fishermen and Shikara walas, who depend on the lake for their livelihood, are now facing difficulties. Many have resorted to breaking the ice to carve pathways for their boats, ensuring connectivity between houseboats, floating markets, and the shore.

The authorities have cautioned residents and visitors against walking on the frozen surface, citing safety concerns. “The ice may appear thick, but it is not stable enough to support weight,” said a senior official from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

A Boost to Tourism
Despite the challenges, the freezing of Dal Lake has drawn tourists in droves. Hotels and houseboats are seeing increased bookings as visitors arrive to witness the rare event. “It’s like a scene out of a fairytale. The frozen lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, is a sight I will never forget,” said Priya Singh, a tourist from Delhi.

As Dal Lake stands frozen, it continues to captivate hearts while reminding the region of its unique relationship with nature. Whether seen as a rare wonder or a challenge to overcome, the frozen Dal Lake has etched itself into the history and memory of Kashmir once again.
